Why Uninsured Patients Use the ER More Often

Uninsured adults are more likely to rely on the ER for issues that could often be treated in a primary care office. About 20–25% of uninsured adults report at least one ER visit per year, compared to only 13–15% of insured adults.

The reasons are clear: without regular access to a primary doctor or urgent care, the emergency room becomes the only dependable option. Unfortunately, this can create higher costs for patients and longer wait times for everyone.

Expanding affordable access to primary care could help reduce unnecessary ER visits and improve overall health outcomes.
